Singing in the Rain
We have received more calls from customers regarding their swimming pool water balance, so following on from our last blog we thought this might help
What Should I Do With My Swimming Pool Now It Has Rained So Much?
With what appears as much rain in a month as we should get in a year, I think the Weather Gods forgot when Wimbledon was on and as they could not ruin the Tennis they are now reeking huge retribution on the rest of us on a truly Biblical scale. Hopefully though their anger will soon be spent and we can go back to enjoying our pools in the sunshine that we have come to expect on our little Desert Island.
Apart from taking away our opportunity to swim, rain also has a measurable effect on the water in our swimming pool and it is important that regular checks and corrections are made when the weather is this inclement.
The natural pH of water is 7 but in your swimming pool should be between 7.2 & 7.3 for the sanatisers to work efficiently. Unfortunately rainwater has a much lower pH as it is slightly acidic. In some cases rainwater can even have a pH level as low as 5 and this will obviously reduce the pH level in your swimming pool and with the many dissolved particles in the rain it could also affect the calcium levels in your swimming pool too.
After heavy rainfall it is important to
- Test your swimming pool water for free Chlorine, pH, Total Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness and adjust to the correct levels to ensure correct sanitation and water balance
- Check the water level of your pool and if too high remove some of the water from your pool by either pumping to waste using the multi-port valve or if you have a summer Intex style pool by using the hose plug adapter.
- Turn on filtration to allow chemicals to reach every part of your pool, filter out dissolved particles brought in with the rain and also to reduce cold spots.
Doing these checks as soon as possible after the rain has stopped will mean your pool is ideal to use when the sun pokes it’s head out from behind those stormy rain clouds.
Happy Swimming and for all those Gene Kelly fans or those with a sense of humour at our great british weather take a look at the you tube video
